Debuts for Eagles duo as England edge out Switzerland at Wembley : Our verdict on how they all rated

England recovered at the end of a dodgy first half to beat Switzerland 2-1 at Wembley after going a goal down.

Harry Kane’s penalty secured the win as he drew level with Bobby Charlton on 49 goals for his country. Luke Shaw reprised his Euro 2020 final goal against Italy to cancel a goal from Breel Embolo.

But how did everyone rate in this friendly between two Qatar-bound opponents. We assess the players involved.

England (3-4-2-1)

Jordan Pickford: 8

Really busy first half. Fine low left-handed stop to deny Granit Xhaka but beaten soon after by a header from Brem Embolo he could do nothing about. Another great reflex save needed to push a Fabian Frei shot onto the crossbar as the Swiss nearly doubled their lead. Beaten by inswinging corner which hit a post, but kept out follow-up from Ricardo Rodriguez.

Ben White: 7

A late replacement for John Stones. The Arsenal defender was caught under a cross from Xherdan Shaqiri which gave the Swiss their opener and looked uncomfortable early on. Zipped an 18-yard shot just over the bar from a Grealish pass and had a much better second half, joining in attacks.

Conor Coady: 6

Struggled to make a case for being the man to replace Harry Maguire on a regular basis. At the centre of a three-man defence which was overrun at times. At least got forward to send in a late header on target which was well saved.

Marc Guehi: 6

A great day for the Crystal Palace defender. Was given quite a tough first-half baptism as the Swiss briefly threatened to run riot. Got in a header at a corner which was just off target. Another header earned a penalty in the 77th minute after a VAR check for handball by Steven Zuber.

Kyle Walker-Peters: 6

Hit a post on his debut – albeit after an offside flag had been raised. Got into some good attacking positions down the right.

Jordan Henderson: 6

Skipper of a mixed bag of seasoned internationals and newcomers. Needed more as a cheer-leader and stabilising presence during a stormy first-half for England.

Conor Gallagher: 8

Bursting with energy from the word go and put in an early cross into the danger zone and had a clipped left-footer headed clear from under the bar. It was his cross which was converted by Shaw for the equaliser.

Luke Shaw: 6

Hardly in the game until just before the break when he hammered home from the edge of the area from Gallagher’s pass across the face of goal.

Phil Foden: 6

Not quite at his best. Found it hard to set up lines of communication with Kane and looked a little short of his usual levels of inspiration and industry. Withdrawn after an hour.

Mason Mount: 6

Excellent run through defenders into the inside-left channel to released Phil Foden but we were hoping for more from the Chelsea midfielder.

Harry Kane: 6

Did not have too many opportunities to add to his 48 international goals until he fired home a 79th minute penalty with typical power and accuracy. He moves level with Bobby Charlton on the all-time list. Stretched to reach a Gallagher chip in the first half but ran out of room and was thwarted easily by keeper Jonas Omlin.

Substitutes:

Declan Rice (on for Gallager 62) Continued to offer the vibrancy supplied by Gallagher.

Tyrick Mitchell (on for Shaw 62) Became the third Palace player involved, earning his first England cap. It was a superb moment in the defender’s career. Is the 100th player to be called up by Gareth Southgate.

Raheem Sterling (on for Walker-Peters 62)

Jack Grealish (on for Mount 62) Added a little more dynamism to reinvigorate an attack that seemed subdued.

Jude Bellingham (on for Foden 79)

Ollie Watkins (on for Kane 88)
