The manager of the Belgium women's national football team has aimed a dig at England superstar Harry Kane.
The striking similarities between Belgium’s all-time record goalscorer Tessa Wullaert and the former Tottenham hitman are well documented on both sides of the Channel.
Both belong to the class of 1993. Both score for fun. Both are ageing like fine wine. Both are showing no signs of slowing down.
And nobody has scored more goals for their respective countries than the Bayern Munich star and Wullaert who is 14 strikes ahead of Chelsea flop Lukaku on 90.
The Leytonstone-born A-lister has found the back of the net 78 times in 120 appearances for England. Meanwhile, former Manchester City and Inter star Wullaert took her tally to 104 international goals with a hat-trick and an assist in Belgium’s 6-0 thrashing of Luxembourg yesterday.
And there’s so much more uniting Harry and Tessa than just goals and age.
Like Kane, she steps up when the chips are down. When their teams are having a poor day at the office, they can get them out of jail with a moment of inspiration in the mantle of centre-forward or/and attacking midfielder.
Tessa also loves to drop deep and drift left and right to help build play. Not content with waiting in the box, she enjoys interchanging positions with teammates.
By doing so, she often drags a centre-back or two out of position and opens up space for others.
Kane, too, is not content with being fixed centrally and waiting for things to happen. Instead he makes them happen. Both also control games with their tactical intelligence, flawless passing and relentless pursuit of technical excellence.
Yet Kane is still some way behind Wullaert when it comes to trophies.
She has 14 medals in her jam-packed cabinet. But hasn't added to them since 2022 after two second-place finishes in Serie A with Inter Milan. And while Kane has only recently begun adding major team honours to his collection, he has lifted an astonishing FOUR major trophies since May 2025, including two Bundesliga titles.
To cut a long story short the pair combine elite finishing with playmaking ability. In front of goal they have few equals. The feet of a number 10 and the killer instinct of a number 9.
Yet while Kane does not take corners or indirect free-kicks, Wullaert does that too, which is astonishing.
Yesterday she ran Luxembourg ragged, and the way she picked out Janssens for Belgium’s fourth goal with a chipped pass evoked memories of a prime Frank Lampard.
So when Capital Football asked Belgium’s Icelandic manager Elisabet Gunnarsdottir if Tessa Wullaert reminded her of Kane, she said:
“I’ve actually never thought about Harry Kane when watching Tessa.
“But maybe Harry Kane reminds me of Tessa.
“Maybe Harry Kane reminds me of Tessa!”
Yet despite Wullaert’s club numbers in recent seasons (28 goals for Inter Milan) being nowhere near Kane’s — who scored 61 goals last season alone — she was not in the mood to change her mind.
She added: "Tessa also has an outstanding vision of the game.
“She has all parts of it.
"When she is on the ball, she can read where the spaces are and come to pick up the ball, but she also has the instinct to run in behind.
“Everyone knows Tessa can score from anywhere on the pitch.”
