The Lions leapfrogged the Hoops in the table after extending their unbeaten away record - ending the R's unbeaten home start in the process.
It is 10 years since the Lions started a campaign unbeaten on the road in the first five and the way the game started, it looked like their run of success would be ended by a dominant Rangers. But two goals before the break against the run of play put the visitors in the driving seat and they did not relinquish their advantage.
Not even a late Hoops goal could change the outcome - despite the injury time board offering us eight 'extra' minutes.
The atmosphere was suitably raucous at kick-off after both sets of fans shared a minute of applause in appreciation of Gordon Jago, who passed away in July. He had guided both today's teams to success back in the day.
Noise levels were raised further by Lions fans booing the pre-match knee and Rangers fans almost seeing a full-blooded drive from Paul Smyth beat league debutant Max Crocombe in the opening seconds. The Kiwi keeper's fine save will have settled nerves.
Paul Nardi's fingertips rescued the R's after Jonathan Varane had been dispossessed by former Ranger Massimo Luongo to open up space in front of goal for Will Smallbone to let fly from just outside the area.
Millwall were dealt an early blow when Luongo was stretchered off with what seemed a knee injury - both sets of fans applauding the Aussie's exit.
Michael Frey and Richard Kone then combined well to set up Smyth for a shot from the left edge of the area that clipped the top of the crossbar as the lively start continued.
Rangers were having much the better of it but fell behind when a ball hit from deep by Billy Mitchell bypassed all the Hoops and Femi Azeez had room to control and put away at the second attempt after Nardi had blocked his initial effort.
Worse was to follow for Julien Stephan's men as they fell further behind on the stroke of half time. From a quick throw-in and ball swung in towards the far post by Azeez, Mihailo Ivanovic ghosted in to nod home from close range for his first of the season to stun the Loft End.
The R's seldom looked like getting back into it during a much scrappier second half until very late on.
An injection of hope came in the shape of subs Koki Saito - fresh from his first international appearance for Japan - and Kader Dembele, but Alex Neil's side seemed to grow stronger as the afternoon wore on.
The mood only changed when Dembele and Saito combined to outflank the Millwall rearguard and set up Rumarn Burrell for a tap in with five minutes to play.
Burrell then got on the end of Steve Cook header to nod over from close in during the last knockings but the hosts had not done quite enough to save the day.
