England (0) 1 White 81

Uruguay (0) 1 Valverde pen 90+3

After six straight wins this season without conceding during a qualification breeze, England surrendered their 100 per cent record. Ben White, of all people, prodded in what should have been a late winner, but then was adjudged - after a VAR intervention - to have fouled Federico Vinas in the box and Federico Valverde buried the penalty.

The match summary: Uruguay may have been thrashed 5-1 by Mauricio Pochettino's USA not so long ago but defended robustly - not afraid to give up a ton of fouls in their determination not to concede.

A Marcus Rashford run from half way when he left defenders trailing in his wake was as good as it got during a drab first half. No one could get onto his final cross from the byline. In a game of few chances, Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the best chance, glancing a header wide from close in when he really should have scored.

The game looked destined to finish 0-0 until Cole Palmer's inswinging corner found its way through a clutch of bodies to the back post for White to touch home. Uruguay protested vehemently with German ref Sven Jabionski - believing there had been a foul on one of their defenders. But the South Americans had the last laugh when they were awarded a spot kick at the death.

The context: Both nations have qualified for this summer's World Cup and are using this final international window to fine-tune their plans. In the case of England's enlarged squad over two games - also covering the game against Japan on Tuesday night - it's all about players auditioning for inclusion in the flight across the Atlantic. Tonight's line-up was very much the shadow cabinet - with the expected first choicers for Thomas Tuchel kept back until the next game.

The history: England don't have many happy memories of playing against the double World Cup winners. They lost 2-1 to them in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil - Luis Suarez scoring twice - and also lost to them in the 1954 tournament while the opening match of the 1966 tournament famously ended in a drab 0-0 at Wembley. A 2-1 friendly win at Anfield in 2006 was one of only three wins in 11 encounters for the Three Lions.

Anglo interest in the opposition: The South Americans are now under the guidance of former Leeds United guru Marcelo Bielsa. Darwin Nunez, formerly of Liverpool, started on the bench. Their skipper is the brilliant Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, who hit a hat-trick against Man City the other day. Man Utd midfielder Manuel Ugarte started.

How did the London players do:

Dom Solanke (Spurs) looked full of intent and was prepared to take on players at every opportunity. He looked urgent. As did Noni Madueke (Arsenal) who has competition for the two spaces on the right wing that will be allocated. But he went off before the interval after taking a blow to the face, with Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) taking his place.

Djed Spence (Spurs) enjoyed the break from the relegation fight in north London to turn in an adventurous display, with several marauding runs down the left flank. Jordan Henderson (Brentford) was an important glue doing his best to bind a collection of players who often betrayed the fact they were not familiar to each other. But with more creativity needed, Adam Wharton (Palace) came on for him at the break to earn his fourth cap. England looked instantly more progressive.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea) received a big cheer when he came on for Phil Foden - the Man City midfielder having taken a fearful clattering from Ronald Araujo early in the second half. It is his 13th cap. White (Arsenal) controversially back in the fold after turning his back on Gareth Southgate's squad at Qatar four years ago, got some boos when he came on midway through the second half and more even after he was announced as the goalscorer.

Atmosphere: Very quiet around the arena for the most part, apart from in the corner frequented by bouncing Uruguay fans. The first paper planes were soon being launched and greeted with cheers when they landed on the pitch. The stands were emptying long before the end.

Next up: After the visit of Japan, England play New Zealand and Costa Rica in World Cup warm-ups in Florida. They kick-off their group games against Croatia on June 17 before taking on Ghana and Panama.

England: (4-2-3-1) Trafford - Livramento, Tomori (White 68), Maguire, Spence (Hall 68) - Garner (Mainoo 68), Henderson (Wharton h/t) - Madueke (Bowen 38), Foden (Palmer 56), Rashford (Barnes 68) - Solanke (Calvert-Lewin 56)

Uruguay: (4-3-3) Muslera - Varela, Olivera (Sanabria 87), Ronald Araujo, Piquerez (Gimenez 16) - Valverde, Ugarte (Rodriguez 87), De Arrascaeta (Nunez 88) - Canobbio (Martinez 88), Aguirre (Vinas 64), Max Araujo (Pellistri 64)
