Championship

Charlton Athletic (1) 1 Docherty 1

Ipswich Town (1) 2 Furlong 36, Philogene 58 pen

Charlton's hopes of securing the one point they need to ensure their Championship survival fell tantalisingly out of reach as they failed to make the most of a first minute goal against promotion-chasing Ipswich.

They are still in the box seat with two still to play and the only team they have to worry about, Oxford United, have to visit Millwall on the final day, when the Lions might still be chasing second spot.

The late slide towards the danger zone with a run of seven without victory will - hopefully for them - be academic if they can avoid defeat at home to Hull or away to Swansea on the final day.

The Addicks could hardly have asked for a better start.

They were a goal up within a minute as Tyreece Cambell intercepted a poor Ben Johnson pass before hitting a low cross that keeper Christian Walton could only parry out to Greg Docherty steaming in for the kill. The Charlton skipper made no mistake.

Charlton's plans took an early blow when Amari'i Bell was forced off injured but at least Lloyd Jones was able to shrug off an early knock after lengthy treatment to resume his key role at the heart of that defence.

Ipswich's response was muted at first but they began to get their act together, with Ivan Azon passing up a good chance to equalise from close in after a ball was pulled back from the byline. Then, Darnell Furlong made the most of defenders backing off to drill in a low shot across Thomas Kaminski into the far bottom corner from 20 yards.

Jayden Fevrier was looking lively down the right and had the confidence to take on defenders and chance his arm. He snapped an angled shot into the side netting.

But Ipswich knew this was a game they needed to win with time running out in the race for automatic promotion and they laid siege on the Addicks goal at the start of the second half, knowing that a win would put them back into that all-important second place above Millwall on goal difference.

They played the ball around patiently, probing for a weakness, and were rewarded just before the hour when they won a penalty after a trip on Furlong that Jayden Philogene just about managed to put away - the shot creeping underneath a diving Kaminski.

The keeper not long after dived full length to keep out a goalbound shot from Philogene to keep the Addicks alive and he also made an important double save in injury time to deny sub Marcelino Nunez.

But Charlton's hopes of salvaging a point were not helped by sub Matty Godden hobbling off lame, having picked up a knock soon after coming on to leave Nathan Jones' team effectively down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes as all five subs had already been used.
