Championship
Charlton Athletic (1) 1 Dykes 30
Bristol City (1) 2 Twine 11, Eile 55
Charlton fashioned some great late chances to salvage something from a disappointing afternoon but once again paid for a lack of cutting edge.
They have not scored more than once in a home game since October and despite recovering from conceding an early goal, they were unable to hit back a second time after falling behind again at the start of the second half.
It was the perfect start for 78-year-old Roy Hodgson, who has taken over as caretaker boss for Bristol's last seven games, but it left Nathan Jones' men facing up to an eighth home defeat of the campaign.
The Addicks were grateful for an early let-off when Neto Borges sliced through midfield to release Emil Riis for a one v one - but the City striker put his shot wide of Will Mannion's left hand post.
But it was not long before the visitors grabbed the lead after an impressive start. A nicely weighted ball from Max Bird found Scott Twine in space just inside the box and his finish was unerring.
Charlton struggled to get their game going but they profited from a controversial throw-in in their favour from Harry Clarke to build a quick move down the right and an exchange of passes between Lyndon Dykes and Charlie Kelman ended with Dykes clipping in a shot off the inside of the far post.
It was a welcome and very rare first half goal for home fans, who have waited since November to see their team score at the Valley in the opening 45 minutes.
The visitors regained the lead after the interval when Twine's low free-kick could only be palmed out by Mannion back into the orbit of defender Noah Eile who managed to prod the ball over the line.
There was some late pressure which looked like it had brought an equaliser when sub Matt Godden got on the end of a Lloyd Jones cross from close range shot and only a jutting left leg from keeper Radek Vitek kept it out.
Tyreese Campbell - another of the subs - also passed up a great chance, firing off target when he had time and space inside the box after a ball in from the right found him.
And there was also a late chance for Joe Rankin-Costello that Vitek was again equal to and with City striker Sinclair Armstrong missing two gilt-edged chances on the counter to finish the job, the Addicks were able to keep believing. But in the end, they could not get the goal they wanted.
Addicks: (3-5-2) Mannion - Ramsey, Jones, Bell - Clarke (Godden 79), Carey, Coventry (Rankin-Costello 79), Docherty (Fevrier 87), Chambers (Campbell 65) - Dykes, Kelman (Fullah 65)
