Championship

Charlton Athletic (0) 0

Leicester City (0) 1 Fatawu 48

The Addicks suffered their first setback of the campaign as the first goal they conceded in three Championship matches was enough to leave them empty-handed.

Once again, Nathan Jones' players could not be faulted for their high-press and work-rate, while defensively they were more than sound once again. But goals are in short supply, with Harvey Knibbs' late goal on the opening day their only one so far.

A slow burner of a contest struggled to spark into life during a dull, low quality first 45 minutes in which the closest Charlton came to scoring was with a blistering Conor Coventry drive from about 30 yards that was tipped over athletically by keeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

The xG at the break was 0.22 v 0.09. The game in terms of chances was quiet, in other words, with the personal battle between Lloyd Jones and Leicester striker Jordan Ayew the only subplot of real note.

The chances were that we'd see more in the second half and soon after the restart, Jones' towering backpost header from a Coventry corner needed a defender's header to divert it from danger. Many more home corners would be forced before the end.

That near miss ignited proceedings and when Abdul Fatawu was allowed to scamper into the inside right channel and check back onto his left-foot, the Foxes winger curled a perfect shot into the far corner beyond Thomas Kaminski.

Charlton responded with Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn - in from the start in place of Charlie Kelman - linking up to offer a sight at goal for Rob Apter, but his low shot was pushed wide.

A late flurry saw Greg Docherty blaze over from Leaburn's lay-off - with the striker having just had a header saved by the keeper. Campbell nodded another decent chance over.

Leicester, now managed by former QPR Marti Cifuentes, may not have the star quality of sides that usually come down from the Premier League, but they have pockets of extra quality and when former Spurs man Harry Winks came on, the Foxes looked more assured.

Disappointment then for the Addicks, but there are two London derbies coming up next in the league for them to try and put today right. A trip to QPR next week is followed by a home clash with Millwall after the international break.
