Nathan Jones' men once more served notice of just how tough a nut they will be to crack this season as they claimed a second successive clean sheet against an established Championship side.
With Lloyd Jones again outstanding in the heart of the defence, they laid the perfect foundation for a fully deserved draw which came close to being converted into a win.
Not bad away to a side who reached last season's playoffs and smashed four past Sheffield United in their first game.
Just as they did against Watford last week at the Valley, Charlton grew stronger as the game wore on and the second half in particular was very impressive as spells of pressure almost produced a winner.
And the packed away end did its bit by keeping the vocal backing going from start toq finish.
Thomas Kaminski did not have too many scares, although he was grateful to see an Anis Mehmeti effort clip the top of the crossbar and sail behind and was also indebted to Jones blocking an Emil Riis shot soon after Mehmeti got in behind the last man to angle a ball just wide.
But with the industrious Tyreece Campbell and Rob Apter asking questions at the other end of the pitch, hopes of repeating last weekend's opening day win remained high.
Apter forced on loan keeper Radek Vitek into a low diving save and Campbell had the stopper scambling to turn a deflected effort against a post. Sonny Carey also flashed a first half shot across the face of goal.
There were fine contributions from Kayne Ramsay and Amarii Bell at the back but it was a solid showing all round that should please Jones every bit as much as the Watford win.
