It needed the continuing great form of Crysencio Summerville to dig West Ham out of a hole at the Pirelli Stadium as they just about overcame their League One hosts in Saturday's FA Cup Fourth Round tie.
But it needed extra-time for the east Londoners to prevail. It took until the 95th minute to make the breakthrough, with a superb strike making it six goals in seven games for the Irons' man in form.
Underlining just how difficult a lunchtime assignment it proved to be, the Hammers had to play out the final 20 minutes with 10 men after Freddie Potts had been sent off for a reckless challenge.
They join west London rivals Chelsea in the fifth round. The Blues had a Friday night stroll at Championship high-riders Hull City, the club new boss Liam Rosenior once managed. Pedro Neto bagged a hat-trick, with Estevao also on target in a 4-0 win.
Arsenal aim to join their London rivals in the last-16 on Sunday, when they take on League One strugglers Wigan Athletic at the Emirates. Brentford will aim to avoid the fate of cup holders Crystal Palace on Monday night when they travel to sixth-tier Macclesfield - who sensationally eliminated the Eagles in the third round.
Fulham, 3-1 winners over Championship leaders Middlesbrough in the last round, travel to Stoke City today for their fourth round tie.
In the Championship, two goals in two minutes at rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday guided Millwall to another victory, which takes them up to third in the table - just three points behind Coventry City, who occupy the second automatic promotion slot.
Jamal Lowe opened the scoring for the doomed Owls on the hour but the Lions hit back, forcing an own goal from Cole McGhee before sub Macauley Langstaff turned in a Femi Azeez cross on 74 minutes for what proved to be the winner. Boss Alex Neil said his side 'made it difficult for themselves' at times but that he was "delighted to get the job done."
Ed Still's first game in charge of Watford ended in a 2-2 draw at Preston. After trailing at the interval, the Hornets hit back to lead with two goals in a couple of minutes through Othmane Maamma and an own goal. But sub Milutin Osmajic rescued a point for the home side. It's now eight without a win for Watford.
In League One, AFC Wimbledon had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Barnsley after recovering from going 2-0 down inside 14 minutes to lead 3-3. A quickfire double from Omar Bugiel levelled it up before the interval and Marcus Browne netted to put the Dons ahead. But Scott Banks ensured it was honours even with a strike three minutes from time.
The big clash at the top of League Two saw leaders Bromley held to a 1-1 draw at the Copperjax Stadium by third-placed Notts County. The Ravens lead through an own goal from Matt Dennis but County equalised with a second half penalty from Scott Robertson.
The result means Bromley remain the one team in the top four divsions with an unbeaten home record. Their lead at the top ahead of Cambridge remains at four points.
Meanwhile Barnet missed the chance to close the gap on the top seven places as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Cheltenham at The Hive.
