Weekend roundup: Addicks storm to the summit, QPR land fine away win, but Millwall slump and Hammers are held

It may not have been that spectacular, but Charlton Athletic fans are not complaining.

Karlan Grant's 56th minute strike was enough to beat Preston 1-0 at the Valley on Sunday to make it an unexpectedly perfect start to this new Championship season for Nathan Jones' men.

That made it three wins out of three for the Addicks, who are the only team with a 100 per cent record in the division. It once again owed much to a solid defence, with keeper Arthur Okonkwo having a largely trouble-free afternoon. It was Grant's first goal for the club following his departure to Huddersfield a few years ago.

It is only the second time in their history that Charlton have won their opening trio of fixtures in the second tier.

"It's not so much being top of the league, it's that we've got nine points from three games and that's a big thing," Jones said. "And it's the manner of it too - we went to West Ham, a Premier League side, and had to defend really well, but the other two games, both at home, we were well worth the wins."

Also in a happy state are QPR, who bagged a second away win of the season - defeating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Ewood Park. After conceding at the start of the second half to Ryoya Morishita, the Hoops hit back immediately with Paul Smyth levelling it up. Jimmy Dunne then headed in a 74th minute winner - the assist coming from newcomer Tariq Lamptey.

The R's remain unbeaten and are fourth in the table on seven points, overtaking London rivals Millwall, who crashed 5-1 at Southampton for their first defeat of the season.

QPR boss Julien Stephan said: "We conceded an unbelievable goal but I really enjoyed the players' reaction after that - not just because we scored quickly but because the technical level increased a lot compared to the second part of the first half, and the intensity too. I think we were really dominant in the second half.

"But if we want to be a top team, we have to finish games like this with three or four goals. When we're dominant like that and continue to push, we have to kill the game off - that's probably the next step we need to reach."

The lions took the lead at Southampton through summer signing Mark Sykes. But that 15th minute lead was wiped out before the break, with Cyle Larin scoring the first of two goals for the afternoon and Finn Azaz making it 2-1.

Leo Scienza, with a penalty and Tom Fellows netted either side of Larin's second goal.

"I was surprised how much their first goal seemed to set us back, which I don't understand. We normally go again" said boss Alex Neil. "It was disappointing."

Meanwhile, West Ham are still searching for a first league win after being held to a 1-1 draw by unbeaten Watford at Vicarage Road. The Hornets took the lead with a lovely solo effort from Amin Nabizada - his second goal of the campaign. An own goal from Mattie Pollock on 27 minutes made it all square and despite second half pressure, the Hammers could not force a winner.

There were two Premier League games involving London club up north on Sunday, with neither Brentford nor Fulham coming home with all three points.

Brentford have never lost a Premier League game when Kevin Schade has found the back of the net - winning 13 and drawing three before today - and his first half strike just before the interval was a just reward for a dominant first 45 minutes.

But the Bees had to settle for a 1-1 draw after Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbed an equaliser 11 minutes from time.

Fulham suffered their second defeat in the opening two games as they lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Sub Wilson Isidor scored the winner for them in the 75th minute of a scrappy encounter which offered up few clear-cut chances.

Meanwhile, in League One, AFC Wimbledon are off the mark as a Myles Hippolyte goal two minutes from time saw them emerge as 1-0 winners over Wigan Athletic at Plough Lane.

They are now level on points (four from three games) with Bromley who endured a horror afternoon against Sheffield Wednesday. They were thrashed 7-2 for a chastening first loss of the season in the league.

The Ravens were 3-0 down at half-time after Callum Slattery, Mason Burslow and Jamal Lowe all found the net. And it got worse after the turn around as four more goals flew past keeper Shamal George. Liue Barry hit a quick double and Lowe scored his second before Gabriel Otegbayo made it seven.

Some pride was salvaged with a late penalty from Victor Adeboyejo and an own goal from Otegbayo.

"It was just terrible," said boss Andy woodman. "We got absolutely everything wrong. There wasn't one bit that we did right. We didn't make tackles, we didn't make passes, we didn't show players in the right areas. We didn't defend properly. I could go on and on. It was a complete disaster of a day. We didn't half make it easy for them."

It was also not a great day for Leyton Orient as they were beaten 3-1 by Barnsley at Brisbane Road. Makenzie Kirk set the Tykes on their way to a first win of the season in the first half and a Cameron McGeehan penalty extended the lead before Reyes Cleary made it 3-0.

An 85th minute goal from Nicholas Oyekunle was a case of too little, too late for the O's, who have started with an away win and two home defeats in three League One clashes.
