Nathan Jones did not hold back in his disappointment with his experienced midfielder Conor Coventry for the penalty he gave away in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Bristol City.

The spot kick that resulted from his foul on Dom Ballard allowed City back into a game the Addicks had begun so well and cost them vital momentum, having taken a deserved early lead.

"I'm a bit disappointed really, because you know we've worked on a load in the last two weeks, freshened them up and I thought we started really well - we looked fluid and scored and then didn't really go on," said the Charlton boss.

"We stopped passing the ball well, gave the ball away, went deep and passive and that was the frustration. The goal I'm really disappointed about because it's someone rushing out dangling their leg and that's the second time he's done that. He has to be better than that as a defensive midfield player.

"It's poor defending. We pride ourselves on clean sheets. The goal killed any momentum."

Jones continued: ""We were better when we changed shape second half and had the best chances of the game to have won it. We were better. We handled them better and were bolder and braver in terms of our shape and what we did. We had more territory and created chances from that. It was there to be won.

"I'd like to see us have a little more potency. It's what we're looking for. We need to be better in certain moments.

"We're reasonably consistent. We've only lost two games and haven't lost at home. We won the first three and although we didn't win the last two games, we felt we should have won - we're showing levels of consistency, we'd just like to turn these draws into wins. In Championship football, the margins are always really small."

Jones believes Josh Edwards will need a month to get back up to speed as he recovers from an ankle injury. The Scottish defender made only his second appearance of the campaign and was given 50 minutes.

"I think before we see the best of him, we're looking at three or four weeks," Jones said. "We won't be able to play him in every game or he could pick up a secondary injury so we are going to have to pick his minutes and times and I'm sure going into the next international break, we'll see a different Josh Edwards."
