Tottenham surrender victory at the last as Roma salvage injury time equaliser in thrilling contest

Europa League Group Stage Match 5/8

Tottenham Hotspur (2) 2 Son pen 5, Johnson 34

AS Roma (1) 2 N'Dicka 20, Hummels 90+2

Spurs paid the price for failing to put to bed a game they had in the palm of their hands - conceding in injury time in a thrilling encounter.

As a first ever meeting between the sides it sets a fine standard for future clashes. You won't see many games this season with as many missed chances and instances of balls striking posts as this one.

In the end the Romans - now improbably led by former Chelsea, Leicester City (and Watford) boss Claudio Ranieri - maybe deserved to get something from the game. In any event, this was a spectacle well worth enduring the cold night air to witness - though Spurs fans will leave feeling deflated about this one getting away.

Spurs thought they had survived a late rally when Fraser Foster made a superb flying save to deny Gianluca Mancini . But from the resulting corner, Angelino's low cross was fired in by Mats Hummels at the far post. It was redemption for the stalwart German defender, who had given away the opening goal by conceding a penalty.

The late goal conceded is by no means a disaster for Ange Postecoglou's men. They have three wins a draw from five games and are still in a good position to finish in the top eight to qualify automatically for the knock-outs without recourse to the play-offs.

After tonight, they play one more match on the road (Glasgow Rangers in a fortnight) before concluding their group programme with January fixtures against Hoffenheim (away) and Elfsborg (at home).

Roma have a bit more work to do, having only won one of their opening five matches - against Dynamo Kiev - and only two in 11 in all competitions. But their second half performance suggests they are far from done.

Momentum is everything in this game and if Spurs wanted a spill-over from the weekend's sensational 4-0 win at the Etihad, they could hardly have wished for a better start.

Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg wasn't too excited about an early mis-timed tackle from Hummels on Pape Sarr, but VAR certainly was. The official was summoned to the pitchside screen and agreed it should be a penalty. Hueng-Min Son duly dispatched the spot-kick with the minimum of fuss.

Roma responded with a good move that saw one-time Juventus striker Paulo Dybala force Forster into a smothering save.

But the keeper, one of four changes from Manchester, could do little about a looping header that flew over him and under the bar from Evan N'Dicka following a free-kick from out on the left by Dybala - or a flashing first-time shot from Stephan El Shaarawy that angled across him into the bottom left hand corner. Luckily, the second of those was chalked off for offside.

The breathless nature of the contest continued with chances at both ends. Dejan Kulusevski had a shot blocked and Dom Solanke's hooked strike was saved spectacularly by Mile Svilar before Sarr also tested the keeper. At the other end, Dybala fashioned an opening and drilled another effort on target.

There was just no let-up and when the tireless Kulusevski got around the right side of the Roma defence, his cut-back was put away by Brennan Johnson. Kulusevski rolled a shot against a post in the next attack as the avalanche of chances continued. Son skied the rebound over and then curled in another shot that had Serbian stopper Svilar stretching.

The game should have been put to bed before the break, but Roma were energised by the fact that it wasn't. A good spell of pressure ended with Angelino's deflected drive rebounding off the crossbar. Pedro Porro responded in kind with a free-kick that clipped the top of the Italians' woodwork.

But Ange's team were starting to dice with death and they were lucky that Roma had two goals disallowed and that Manu Kone fired wide when presented with a great chance from inside the box.

Solanke headed against the bar from no distance as the goal frame again took a hammering and that failure to claim a third goal was to eventually be punished.
