After Extra Time : Score on 90 mins: 1-1

A first Hammers goal for winter signing Taty Castellnos secured West Ham's passage into the forth round of the FA Cup - but not before a gritty Hoops had taken them to extra-time and made life difficult for their cross-town opponents.

How the Irons, boss Nuno Espirito Santo and the 27-year-old match-winner from Argentina needed that crowning moment.

After 10 games without a win and a sickly home record in the league of eight defeats in 11 home games, this was not a match the Hammers could afford to ignore as a potential pick-me-up.

They also ought to have felt a Championship side with an abysmal track record in the competition - more third round knock-outs than any other side, with 52 before today - could be ideal for the task in hand.

But it proved to be hard work.

Joe Walsh's fingertips were all that stood in the way of an opening goal from the game's most impressive player, Crysencio Summerville, cutting in from the left onto a pass from Lazio new boy Castellanos. The ball looked destined for the top corner but the keeper deflected it just enough to get it over the crossbar.

West Ham had most of the ball without causing too much trouble in the opposition area and the limp nature of the first half was perhaps summed up by the lengthy treatment given to Konstantinos Mavropanos, who was stretchered off towards the end of it.

But right at the conclusion of nine minutes of injury time, the Irons broke the deadlock when Pablo, the midfield replacement for Mavropanos, burst through a tackle and released Soungoutou Magassa for the little sideways pass that ushered in Summerville for a sharp finish.

Julien Stephan had to be pleased with the response. Rangers kept their shape and threatened on the break through Paul Smyth and Amadou Mbengue working the flanks. Rayan Kolli almost wriggled his way through in one raid.

The encouraging state of play persuaded the Hoops into more adventure and when Karamoko Dembele chipped up to the penalty spot, Richard Kone got the glancing contact he needed to get it over and past Mads Hermansen.

It was all set for a grandstand finish. The Irons stepped it up and Castellanos' powerful drive from outside the area demanded a watchful push over the bar from Walsh. Kone got back to head off the line when Tomas Soucek nodded goalwards.

In extra-time, Soucek came close to converting a Jarrod Bowen cross at the near post, but Walsh blocked and the stopper also did well flinging himself to his left to turn a Summerville shot aside.

There was no denying who the best player on the pitch was and when Summerville again caused grief with his pace down the left, the winger sat up a beautiful cross for Castellanos to head powerfully into the bottom corner.

Ultimately it ended in disappointment, then, for the underdogs, though those making the trip from Loftus Road appreciated that their side gave it a good go and they seemed to enjoy their day out in Stratford.

"We'll see you all next year!" was the chant from a lively away end, in a nod to their host's potential for relegation to the Championship.

This was a first meeting between the sides since the Hoops' relegation season in 2014/15. Not since August 1993 had the west Londoners triumphed away to West Ham and it once more proved to be an unlucky fixture.
