West Ham's battle to beat the drop received the vital boost of a late winner - a goal made all the more important by the fact that relegation rivals Spurs had just scored a late winner of their own at Wolves.
Callum Wilson has not been an unqualified success for the Irons, it's probably fair to say, but the former England striker has now come up with two absolutely vital late winners - the one at Spurs a couple of months ago effectively kick-starting the surge that took them out of the relegation zone.
The result keeps them two points above their north London rivals. A draw would have seen Tottenham overtake them on goal difference.
The win was fortunate and David Moyes came very close to inflicting huge damage on his former club.
On a glorious sunny day at the London Stadium the first half began with few chances. Everton, with their own hopes for European football, played their part to keep the game tight.
It was West Ham who took the lead, with a typical near post header from a corner, scored by Tomas Soucek. The game opened up and Everton received three yellow cards for fouls on the lively Crysencio Summerville.
But Everton took the initiative as the Hammers sat deep to try and defend their lead. And that defending became more and more frantic as Everton poured forward.
Soucek was involved as he deflected a close range Everton shot onto the bar late on and then with time running out, Everton had a string of appeals for a penalty turned down when replays seemed to show Matheus Fernandez may have handled in the area.
Then with just two minutes to go, the excellent Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall smashed home the inevitable equaliser and It looked like Everton’s game to win.
But from nowhere, an El Hadji Diouf cross was headed back by Jarrod Bowen into the path of the onrushing substitute Wilson, who swept the ball in from close range. He had only been on the pitch about 10 minutes.
A late twist to the game and the fight for relegation as West Ham held on to joyous scenes in the London Stadium sunshine. The fight goes on.
