Premier League
Crystal Palace (2) 2 Strand Larsen 17, 33
Burnley (3) 3 Hannibal 40, Anthony 44, Lerma og 45+2
This was a game that should have been all about a dream home debut for Jorgen Strand Larsen but turned into a chaotic evening as the Eagles shipped three goals in seven minutes before the break to fritter away the two goal lead he had given them.
Seeking a first home win since November 1 and what would have been only a third home success in the league all season, the evening could hardly have got off to a better start for the Eagles and their eager-to-please newcomer.
He scored twice in the opening half an hour and it seemed we were in for a rare evening of home joy for the Eagles at Selhurst Park. But Burnley shattered the upbeat mood with their three-goal salvo before the interval.
In handing Burnley a first win in 17 league outings, the Eagles have spurned a gilt-edged opportunity to build on the weekend win at Brighton and the result leaves them still looking anxiously over their shoulders at the teams below them in the table.
At a 'mere' £48m, Strand Larsen is nobody's idea of a cheap bargain - but he soon set about trying to win over any Holmesdale End doubters.
Barely a quarter of an hour into his home debut and the Norwegian was already banging home a goal at the home end - set up by a beautifully weighted pass from Adam Wharton.
The striker got free of Kyle Walker and gave keeper Martin Dubravka no chance with his powerful finish.
A quarter of an hour later and he had his second, getting in front of a defender to guide a stooping header beyond the keeper - Jefferson Lerma claiming the assist with a nice ball in from the right.
Talk about making an impact.
Brought in from a doomed Wolves on the basis that Jean-Philippe Mateta looked to be on his way in the January transfer window, the 26-year-old is not guaranteed to have Eagles fans onside but this was a great start for him.
Former Millwall man Zian Fleming spurned a great chance to equalise when he blasted over an inviting pass from Jadon Anthony, giving a hint Burnley might be able to carve out chances. But no-one could have anticipated the dramatic turnaround to come before the break.
First the Clarets pulled a goal back when Hannibal Mejbri converted a ball played in from the right by Marcus Edwards. Then the Eagles were left stunned when Anthony was allowed to advance into the left side of the area and hammer a low shot to Dean Henderson's right with Lerma turning his back on the shot.
If that was not bad enough, the visitors then took the lead in the next instant when Anthony's corner was headed goalwards by Bashir Humphreys and found its way over the line after Henderson had tipped it onto Lerma, for an own goal.
It was the last straw for Lerma, playing out of position and looking decidedly uncomfortable. He was hooked at the interval, with Chadi Riad taking over in defence.
Boos accompanied the half-time whistle - probably the result of extreme frustration as much as anything.
The Eagles pressed hard to get back on level terms. Ismaila Sarr fired just wide and Daichi Kamada just failed to connect properly with a far-post header, while Brennan Johnson, on as a sub, fired over. But Scott Parker's men had something to fight for now and were determined to hold on.
It's not been a happy few months or the Eagles, to say the least, and this shocking defeat will have done nothing to ease the discontent and feelings of gloom.
The weekend win at Brighton brought much-needed breathing space after a long run of 12 league and cup games without a victory but doubts very much remain after this setback.
The loss of those key players and the imminent departure of Oliver Glasner hangs heavy in the air.
