Maren Mjelde scored the winner that completed a remarkable turnaround for Chelsea as they beat Manchester City 2-1 at Kingsmeadow.

The Norway right-back was on the spot, but knew nothing about the goal - other than when it crossed the line and she was mobbed by her team-mates.

The Blues were looking to extend their nine game winning streak in all competitions, but it looked like City, Chelsea's nemesis in recent seasons were going to leapfrog the west Londoners at the top of the table after they took the lead.

Many teams would have folded at this point - Chelsea of last season most likely would have. But there is a resislence, confidence and togetherness among the squad, that suggests, they won't be beaten until the final whisle.

Chelsea went behind to a wonderfully taken volley from Caroline Weir.

The Blues, who had struck the woodwook twice before they were stung into action, City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck was in inspired form, thwarted a host of chances from the home side, but could only parry the ball into the gleeful path of Beth England, who nodded home the equaliser - than came Mjelde's winner.

She said: "I like to score goals. I don’t remember much from the situation. The ball came in again and I went for it.

"The goalkeeper punched it out and Beth shot and I think it hit my quad.

"It was a strong comeback from us, we showed character.

"Winning against City, we haven’t done that a lot in the last couple of years. It’s a massive win and important goals, so it looks good.

"I think the game was a bit slow in the first half. I felt we were the stronger team, but we struggle a bit to score in the beginning of the games.

"We know we are a fit team that can last the 90 minutes.

"We just wait until the end of the game to finish it off.

"It’ was a game we really wanted to win. It showed strong character to get in there, that’s what this team is all about. There’s a winning mentality growing in this group now.”

Chelsea face Reading, on Wednesday night , at Kingsmeadow in the Continental Tyres cup group match.

The Blues are already through, so many of the fringe players will get a run out to stake their claim for a starting role, on Sunday away to Liverpool in the WSL1.

Kick-off on Wednesday is 8pm.
