Emery sacked after Gunners' worst run since 1992

Arsenal have sacked manager Unai Emery after their worst run of results since 1992.

The Gunners have not won in seven games in all competitions and after an emergency meeting this morning, Arsenal’s board have decided to part company with the Spaniard.

A statement said: “We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team.”

Emery guided the north Londoners to the final of the Europa League in his first season in charge. But the defeat to Chelsea, coupled with a disastrous end to the 2018-19 league campaign, meant the Gunners missed out on a top four finish and this season’s Champions League.

And Arsenal’s form this season has led to calls for the manager’s departure, a decision which was taken this morning. Freddie Ljungberg will be put in temporary charge.

Speaking on behalf of the Arsenal board and owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, Josh Kroenke said: "Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

The Arsenal statement added: “The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.”

Front-runners for the job include Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, Mikel Arteta, Max Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino.

And the statement seemed to give them impression that an announcement would be sooner rather than later. It added: “The search for a new head coach is under way and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”
