Word gets to us that a global celebrity was in our midst at Stamford Bridge for the Everton match last week - but don't feel too bad if you didn't spot him, although Chelsea head coach could have used his strategic skills to unpick the dour Toffemen's defence.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen, who is in London to defend his crown, was in the home end sporting a Chelsea scarf for the 0-0 draw.

Carlsen, a keen Premier League fan and the highest ranked chess player in history, was relaxing on a rest day in the middle of his 12-round match against American challenger Fabiano Caruana.

A draw was the right result for him - the 27-year-old has played five games so far in his title defence, and all of them have been draws. But don't think that means the Norwegian genius is a Chelsea fan.

Two days later Carlsen spend his next rest day having a kickabout in a Mo Salah Roma shirt. Leon Watson, from chess opening trainer chessable.com, said: "Magnus is a big football fan and in the build-up to his title defence he talked about his preparation being pizza, poker and Premier League. "As a Spurs fan though, and a fan of Magnus, I really, really hope he isn't into Chelsea."
