Chelsea winger Carney: I dedicate my two goals to Gemma

Chelsea winger Karen Carney struck twice, a thumping header and a sensational 25-yard strike as Chelsea thrashed Yeovil Town 6-0 today in the WSL 1 League clash at Kingsmeadow. Carney, while delighted with the goals, was keen to ensure that team-mate Gemma Davison got the credit. “It was nice to get on the scoresheet,” she said. “Everyone always takes the mick out of me because I always remind them about the need to keep a clean sheet – it was a good result for us today.” Which of the two stunning strikes did she prefer? “The second of my two goals was probably the better of the two,” she said. “But I have to give a lot of credit to Gemma Davison as she has been grabbing me after training for the past 10 days and we have been doing extra stuff, that has given me more confidence so I’d like to dedicate my two goals to my good friend. She has helped me with my feet movement in particular – she is so tricky and skilful.” Carney was happy to be back playing for Chelsea after the international break. “Lots of players have been away – everyone comes back slightly differently than how they left, so it was good to come back and get this important result. And we keep pushing on. We have a really hectic and important month coming up – so we need to keep these clean sheets and work hard.” Of the off the field activity surrounding them-met Eni Aluko, Carney said: “Everyone has been professional about it. At the end of the day we are footballers and when she comes to train, she puts in all the effort, and she is training well, and playing well. She is concentrating on her football as is the rest of the team, and that’s all we can do. At the end of the day our job is to play football. That’s what we are concentrating on.”

Can she get an England recall? Carney is not ruling anything out. “I think everyone just needs to focus on what they do for Chelsea,” she said. “We have a busy month ahead of us. If good performances lead to extra stuff then I’m sure Eni or anyone else in the team will look forward to those opportunities. But for us we need to focus on Chelsea. If you get that right, then other plaudits will come along with that.”

Chelsea’s other goal-scorers in the 6-0 drubbing were Aluko who hit two s did winger Crystal Dunn.
