WEST HAM V LEEDS UNITED
HOW THE HAMMERS PLAYERS RATED
A dramatic comeback in extra time by West Ham to draw 2-2 with Leeds at the London Stadium was eventually undone with defeat in a penalty shoot out.
Here is how we rated the players after the pulsating FA Cup quarter final.
Alphonse Areola 7: The Hammers goalkeeper could not be faulted for either of Leeds United’s goals at a time when the visitors were taking control of the quarter final tie. Unlucky to feel a knock late on before being replaced by Finlay Herrick.
Kyle Walker 7: Forged forward well at times, particularly late on as West Ham’s confidence grew. Was also put under pressure occasionally.
Max Kilman 5: A difficult afternoon for the defender. At fault for the challenge on Leeds’ Brenden Aaronson which led to a penalty in the 73rd minute. Vulnerable to the Peacock’s counter attacks.
Axel Disasi 7: Unfortunate to see his slight touch take Ao Tanaka’s shot into the roof of the net for Leeds’ first goal. Helped drive the recovery with a heroic stretch to stab home a dream leveller in extra time.
Taty Castellanos 7: Helped to close down the threats of Peacock’s full back Jayden Bogle. Unlucky to see his diving header cannon off the post as West Ham revived, as well as having a goal ruled out by VAR.
El Hadji Malick Diouf 6: Fairly quiet game until later on. The left back’s attacking instincts were corralled by Aaronson when West Ham needed a break.
Adama Traore 8: Excellent technique and work rate throughout for the Hammers. Great engine to take the sting out of regular Leeds’ incursions. Full of running and supplied plenty of inviting crosses which eventually yielded goals for the hosts.
Mateus Fernandes 7: Occasionally caught in possession as Leeds dominated midfield in the first half. Improved thereafter and was alert to force home West Ham’s first goal from Jarrod Bowen’s shot which came off the post.
Jarrod Bowen 8: Linked well with Adama and tested Leeds’ keeper Lucas Perri. Orchestrated the comeback and was unlucky to see a couple of trademark efforts strike the woodwork. The Hammers’ skipper didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.
Soung Magassa 5: Struggled to get to grips with Leeds’ playmaker Tanaka in the first half before being substituted by boss Nuno Espirito Santo at the interval.
Freddie Potts 5: Like, Magassa, had difficulties against the pacey, forward thinking Peacock’s midfield. Anonymous to the extent he was replaced at half time by Tomas Soucek.
Subs: Soucek for Potts (46), Pablo for Magassa (46), Charles for Diouf (105), Herrick for Areola (120), Mayers for Traore (125), Kante for Castellanos (105)
