West Ham fell just short in their bid to close the gap on the teams above them in the relegation battle - and missed the chance to apply important psychological pressure ahead of their rivals' matches later this weekend.

The Irons created several good chances to claim the all-important points but ultimately paid the price for not having their shooting boots on. Only three of their 20 recorded efforts at goal were on target, compared to five out of 10 from the Cherries, who had a couple of good moments of their own.

It was frustrating, though, for Nuno Espirito Santo's men, given the bright start they made at a rainy London Stadium. Axel Disasi poked over the bar from close range following a corner and Crysencio Summerville very nearly converted a fine cross from the right from Taty Castellanos - his final effort just lacking enough power and direction to beat the Cherries keeper.

Summerville continues to enjoy a rich vein of form and one fine dribble past two players ended with him sending a 20-yard effort just over the bar.

But the Irons did not quite have a monopoly on the most eye-catching moments - with a dazzling 60-yard run from new Brazilian striker Rayan almost producing a contender for goal of the season - his curled effort at the end of it clipping the outside of a post.

Some late pressure looked like it might bring joy for the Hammers. Bournemouth were under stress from a succession of corners whipped in under the crossbar and in the final flurry, Bowen skewed a good chance wide after Summerville's angled pass had created an opening.

Before that, Castellanos' spectacular overhead kick from a Bowen cross drifted wide and sub Calum Wilson wasn't too far away from turning in El Hadji Diouf's ball in from the left - keeper Dorde Petrovic making a fine reflex save.

Not quite the outcome they craved then, but West Ham fight on. They could have drawn level on points with Nottingham Forest and to within two points of spurs - but must not sit back and wait to see how those two teams get on tomorrow - Forest at home to Liverpool and Spurs at home to Arsenal in the North London derby.

West Ham's next games are at Liverpool next Saturday and Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday week before a home FA Cup tie against Brentford.

Hammers: (4-5-1) Hermansen - Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Disasi, Diouf - Bowen, Magassa (Kante 84), Soucek (Wilson 72), Fernandes, Summerville - Castellanos.

Cherries: (4-2-3-1) Petrovic - Jimenez (Smith 89), Hill, Senesi, Truffert - Scott, Adams (Christie 66) - Rayan, Kroupi (Unal 89), Adli (Brooks 66) - Evanilson (Tavernier 80)
