Championship
Leicester City (0) 1 Souttar 78
Millwall (0) 1 Langstaff 90
Millwall’s hopes for automatic promotion to the Premier League were dealt a blow on Friday night by already-relegated Leicester City, led by their former manager Gary Rowett.
The 1-1 draw at the half-empty King Power Stadium means that Ipswich Town can finish second if they win their next two games, starting with West Bromwich away on Saturday. Millwall had already secured a place in the play-offs.
Cheered on by more that 3,200 travelling fans Millwall created enough chances for a win, especially in the second half.
Leicester-goalie Jakub Stolatczyuk made a couple of fine saves. Shortly after the break he denied Mihalio Ivanovic from close range. Minutes later he tipped over a header by Thierno Ballo.
While The Lions kept chasing, the home side scored with their first effort on target when Harry Souttar somehow bundled home at the back post twelve minutes before end.
Substitute Macaulay Langstaff saved the night for the visitors with a lovely equalizer in the last minute, steering Millwall into the second place, at least until Saturday afternoon.
In extra time winger Femi Azeez had a glorious chance to win the game for the Wall, but he headed straight at the goalkeeper. Despite the point, it felt like a missed opportunity for Millwall, who had last won at the King Power Stadium in 2011, when Danus Henderson scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory.
Millwall, the side with the best away-record in the Championship, were unlucky to lose their striker Josh Cockburn in the early stages of the game after a clash with Hamza Choudhury.
In the second half Millwall-captain Jake Cooper got away with a yellow card after a late challenge on Abdul Fatawu, who needed a long treatment. It might have been a red card in the Premier League where the VAR gets involved in these kinds of situations.
After sharing the points with the Foxes Millwall only can hope The Tractor Boys get stuck in the mud during the coming two games.
