Lionesses drop two vital points in 0-0 draw with Blackburn
By Football Reporter
London City Lionesses lost ground at the top of the Barclays Women’s Championship after a 0-0 stalemate with Blackburn Rovers.
The hosts controlled the contest at Princes Park but found Rovers keeper Shanell Salgado, who made a superb save from Hayley Nolan late on, in excellent form.
London City laboured in front of goal although Scottish forward Sarah Ewens twice went close from distance at the start of the second half. Rovers were searching for back-to-back wins in the league after last Sunday’s thrilling 3-2 win over Coventry United but never looked interested in another goal-fest.
But they were able to call upon an excellent defensive display, typified by Salgado in goal, who also did brilliantly to tip a stunning shot from Atlanta Primus onto the woodwork not long after the break.
The closest Blackburn came to a goal of their own came in the opening 45, when forward Farah Crompton’s second attempt following a block forced a smart save from keeper Shae Yanez.
Ewens, who came into the game having scored five in her last three games, failed to connect with a cross when well placed, while defender Jamie-Lee Napier fired over the bar as the hosts kept up the pressure with time running out.
Rovers nearly stole it at the end when midfielder Millie Chandarana’s lofted effort was just tipped over the bar by Yanez.
The result means Blackburn are eight points clear of bottom-placed Coventry United, while the Lionesses remain second although are now six points behind table-toppers Bristol City
