Chelsea crash out of Europe, thrashed 4-0 by Wolfsburg in final Champions League group match
By PaulLagan
Chelsea crashed out of Europe in devastating fashion, losing 4-0 to German outfit Wolfsburg tonight.
With progression in their group almost assured, the Blues needed to avoid a two-goal margin defeat to the former Champions League winners.
It was expected that Juventus would see off bottom of the table Servette, and so it proved, but the west Londoners then went onto the pitch and capitulated in the most humbling of manner.
Two early strikes from Huth put Emma Hayes charges under considerable pressure and they fell to it in the second half when Wassmuth nabbed a brace.
Chelsea finished the group in third place with 11 points the same as Juventus and Wolfsburg, but they had a poorer goal difference than the other two.
This was the fourth time that Wolfsburg has ended Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions.
The Blues had hoped that they would go one better than last season when they reached their first Champions League final.
But they were humiliated by a rampant Barcelona.
The Blues have struggled for goals since theIr 3-0 FA Cup final win over Arsenal at the beginning of the month.
The lost away to Reading in the WSL at the weekend. But it was the 0-0 draw at home to Juventus on December 8 that put the Blues in the potentially precarious position in Group A of the Champions League.
