Addicks pegged back for a 1-1 draw succumbing to late goal at Coventry
By Football Reporter
Katie Wilkinson’s 88th-minute strike rescued a point for Coventry United in the FA Women’s Championship.
Elise Hughes put the visitors 1-0 up in the early stages of the second half, though Wilkinson’s late equaliser saw the points shared at the Butts Park Arena.
The Addicks missed out on the chance to move second in the table, while Coventry still sit bottom after being docked points earlier in the campaign.
Hosts Coventry got off to the better start with Katy Morris’ half-volley saved by Eartha Cumings inside the opening ten minutes.
Charlie Estcourt had a couple of chances to put Coventry ahead and they created more opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, with the final ball letting Charlton down in their quest to score.
However the visitors were sharper after the restart, and took the lead just seven minutes into the second period.
Charlton’s corner was originally cleared, but the ball was delivered back into the box and Hughes was able to poke the ball into the back of the net to put them 1-0 up.
And it was nearly 2-0 just six minutes later, though Elisha Sulola saw her curling effort superbly saved by Coventry keeper Lucy Thomas.
Despite falling behind Coventry still created several chances, though the final touch was often lacking.
But after winning a corner, the ball was floated into the box and Wilkinson fired home to snatch a point with just two minutes of normal time to go.
