Shock of the FA Cup? Werner scores as Chelsea win 4-0 against Shrimpers in FA Cup at the Bridge

Timo Werner scored his first goal in 12 games which, some wags might claim was the the shock of the FA Cup 3rd round, but his goal, the second of four for the Blues was enough to settle any nerves and set the Stamford Bridge outfit up for a secure 4-0 win over League Two Morecambe.

German Werner was on the spot to tap home just before the break at the end of the first half.

Apart from a misdirected header earlier on, it was his only contribution in front of goal and it was no surprise to see him get hauled off in the second half.

What Frank Lampard has learnt from this stroll is difficult to ascertain, but he must be thinking twice about starting him for the League match against Fulham on Friday, where the Blues need to get three points to arrest an alarmingly drop in form and points.

The Shrimpers offered little - a couple of chances, one which could have embarrassed Kepa in goal. But the banana skin was not trodden on and the Blues can look forward to being in he hat or the next round.

can Timo Werner had a great chance after just three minutes. He latched onto a baking Ziyech deep cross but could only manage to direct his header wide of Mark Halstead’s right post.

As expected the hime side dominated possession and the key to winning this s FA Cup match will be to unpick a dogged, Morecambe defence.

A wayward long range effort by Emerson was next up for the Blues as they tried the more direct route on seven minutes.

The Shrimpers thought they took a shock lead on 11 minutes when a right wing cross cut shot by Adam Philips almost caught Kepa out at his left post, but the Spain stopper managed to grab the ball and swivel his body, clasping the ball to his midriff, with the ball touching the goal-line, but not crossing to completely.

But that was the only blip in the opening 18 minutes as Mason Mount opened the scoring with a smartly taken, 25-yard thunderbolt that left Hampstead rooted to the spot.

Emerson repeated his effort of earlier, this time he was on target, on 22 minutes, but Halstead was equal to the task, parrying the ball away with Nathaniel Knight-Percival, hacking it to safety.

Philips had the second effort for the Shrimpers on 34 minutes, his angled right-footer, on target, was easily held, this time by Kepa.

With seconds of the game left, Werner finally ended the albatross that hung round his neck for 12 games, when he tucked home from close range after Kai Havertz popped up at the far post to head across goal a Ziyech cross. Such was the surprise by everyone in the stadium, all thinking the German may have been offside, that they stood and watched. It was only when the referee pointed to the centre-spot, that it dawned it was a goal.

There were no changes by either side at half-time.

Within four m utes of the restart and the. Blues increased their lead. Inspired by Ziyech, who can bisect an defence with a clipped angled chip, he did just that, setting up in-running Hudson-Odoi, who took one touch before rifling home past Halstead.

Billy Gilmour though he would try is luck from 30-yards and his left-footer was only just wide as the home side looked to be setting up a goal fest.

Frank Lampard decided to give a couple of players a run out, off came Ziyech for Christian Pulisic, while Werner was hauled off for Olivier Giroud - both of 68 minutes.

Halstead produced two fine saves, denying Havertz and then Pulisic, who then volleyed wide from close range, having been set up by Hudson-Odoi.

Tammy Abraham was next to enter the fray, he replaced Mount on 74 minutes.

Next up as the substitutes continued were Tino Anjorin and Fikayo Tomori, they replaced Hudson-Odoi and Kurt Zouma.

The expected fourth goal came six minutes from time, as Havertz produced a bullet header from a Cesar Azpilicueta, byline cross.
