Carabao Cup 4th Round
Grimsby Town (0) 0
Brentford (3) 5 Jensen 22, Lewis-Potter 26, Nelson 43, Fabio Carvalho (pen) 54, Collins 75
Brentford cruised into the next round of the Carabao Cup by the banks of River Humber at Cleethorpes thanks to a 5-0 with goals by Mathias Jensen, Keane Lewis-Potter, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Carvalho (penalty), and Nathan Collins as Keith Andrews' side made it four wins in the last five matches.
The Bees started slowly, yet methodically against their League Two opponents, who took the early play to the Premier League side.
Brentford appeared far better organised than the Manchester United team beaten by Grimsby on spot kicks 12-11 at the same venue in the Carabao Cup second round tie back in August when Dave Artell, the Mariners' boss, got the better of Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils.
Grimsby Town came into the game off the back of two wins against Gillingham 1-0 and Salford City 2-0 and three losses Crewe Alexandra 2-3, Colchester United 1-2 and Doncaster Rovers 0-3. Meanwhile Brentford came into the game off the back of three wins Liverpool 3-2, West Ham United 2-0, Manchester United 3-1 and two losses Manchester City 0-1 and Fulham 1-3.
The Bees made nine changes from the starting line-up against Liverpool on Saturday evening with only Sepp van den Berg and Dango Ouattara remaining.
Brentford oozed class in this game after early Mariners pressure and the Bees opened the scoring through captain Mathias Jensen who scored with a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area into the bottom left corner of the net from an assist by the lively Keane Lewis-Potter to make it 1-0.
Four minutes later, Keane Lewis-Potter turned goal scorer, heading a Reiss Nelson cross into the bottom corner of the Mariners net guarded by goalkeeper Christy Pym’s to double the lead.
Two minutes from the half time interval the Bees added a third goal through a Reiss Nelson right-footed shot from just outside the Grimsby Town penalty area into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 3-0 from an assist by Fabio Carvalho.
Grimsby Town had a couple of half chances in the first half which were saved by goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson from attempts by Charles Vernam with a shot and Evan Khouri with a header.
In the second half, the travelling Bees fans witnessed two further second-half goals. Nine minutes into the second half, the Bees scored again through Fabio Carvalho who was fouled and the midfielder picked himself up to strike home the dead ball from the penalty spot beyond the diving Pym to make it 4-0.
Bees substitute Nathan Collins scored the final goal on the night to complete a resounding win with a near post header from an assist by his captain on the night Jensen to head beyond the diving Pym again to make it 5-0.
It was a very comprehensive professional performance from the Bees side who travelled back to West London with a place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup competition to look forward to for boss Keith Andrews in his first season at the helm.
