London City Lionesses boss Phillips: It was a whole team performance

By Football Reporter

Having come from behind to beat Crystal Palace Women, 2-1 today, London City Lionesses can be proud of their start to the season.

They sit joint top of the Championship with maximum points from their opening two fixtures.

Only Sunderland, with abetter goal difference keeps them off top spot.

Of the South London derby victory, head coach Melissa Phillips said: “I’m incredibly pleased with the team. Over both matches, it’s been a whole team performance.

“Mentality is something we speak a lot on and the ability to respond and what that looks like in different moments. It’s a credit to the group as it’s an early goal we gave up, but it was a moment we always knew we’d respond from.

“Rianna Jarrett is a handful. She’s got an unbelievable football mind, the way she thinks about the game, reads the game and understands it. She’s obviously a proven goal scorer at every level but she brings so much more to the team because she’s a leader on and off the pitch.

“We’ll always look at the moments of the game where we can be a bit more clinical in front of the goal. If you look at our second goal, it’s an unbelievable string of passes that gets us in behind and it’s our team’s ability to break down different scenarios.

“Ultimately we take the three points from this game with a lot to build on.”
