Leicester City show their class in storming back to crush Brentford hopes of an FA Cup upset

FA Cup Fourth Round

Brentford (1) 1 (Sorensen 6)

Leicester City (0) 3 (Under 46, Tielemans pen 51, Maddison 71)

Mads Bech Sorensen grabbed his first goal for Brentford, but Leicester showed their class with three second half goals to ease into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Bees’ high press and set piece prowess was rewarded with a first-half lead but Brendan Rodgers’ interval team-talk clearly had the desired effect as the Foxes moved up a gear to score twice soon after the restart to turn the match on its head.

The Bees were instantly faced with the sort of Premier League pace they do not encounter on a weekly basis and after Ayoze Perez had flashed a shot just wide, Cengiz Under forced a save from Luke Daniels after another quick Foxes raid down the right.

But the hosts, who rested a raft of first-teamers and were without the suspended Ivan Toney, took the lead through Sorensen with their first real attack after just six minutes.

A corner from the right from Vitaly Janelt flicked off the thigh of Nampalys Mendy and the Danish defender was on hand to bundle in from a couple of yards.

Harvey Barnes was always going to be a danger and he almost equalised after cutting in from the left and having a deflected shot blocked by Ethan Pinnock.

And James Maddison – another of the bright young things currently plying their trade for Leicester – whipped a free-kick over the wall and narrowly wide.

Yet the Bees almost had more joy from another corner – Tariqe Fosu at the far stick volleying another corner from Janelt towards the near post, which keeper Danny Ward palmed away.

And there was more encouragement when Saman Ghoddos ripped a free-kick just over the bar and a second one just under it – Ward getting a hand to stop it dipping into the top corner.

Any dreams of a giant-killing evaporated soon after the restart, though, as was all-square seconds after the restart - Under sweeping the ball past Daniels after good work from Maddison, who slipped the ball into space through a crowd of players.

And the Foxes were very soon in front. Perez forced an save from Daniels, but in the very next attack, Fosu was penalised for a trip on Youri Tielemans and the Belgian calmly converted from the spot with a low shot to Ward’s right.

Under should have made it 3-1 when Ricardo Periera scampered down the right and pulled an inviting ball back into space which was side-footed wide, but it hardly mattered, as Maddison sealed it with a goal in the 71st minute, tucking home after Daniels had blocked a low Barnes shot.

Aaron Pressley came off the bench and should have pulled a goal back after Ward had nudged a shot from Marcus Forss into his path, but he skied over horribly. The result, however, was never in doubt once the Foxes had got their noses in front.
