The mood is becoming more toxic by the week.
Chelsea continued their dismal run of form with a fourth successive defeat without scoring - leaving Champions League qualification hopes in the balance.
They lie sixth and will need Aston Villa to win the Europa League for that placing to be enough. Fifth is starting to look very difficult unless they can turn their fortunes around very quickly.
But the signs are far from promising. Enzo Fernandez has just served a two game club ban for indiscreet comments. There is a suggestion Joao Pedro has also breached squad discipline.
Them there is the growing disenchantment from the stands. There was a protest against the running of the club before kick off. During it, anti board chants were gaining traction.
It doesn't help when results fade too. In addition to those league defeats was the thrashing dished out by PSG in the Champions League. The only relief has been the thrashing of a team about to drop down into League Two.
In is not a stretch to imagine total meltdown should the Blues come a cropper in next weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley. It will surely spell a premature end to Liam Rosenior's troubled time as boss, even if the hierarchy claim he will be there next season, come what may.
That might seem harsh on a coach who only arrived in January but the reality is he has struggled to win over both fans and players - some of whom have been vocal about their incredulity over the decision to part company with Enzo Maresca.
Rosenior could have done with some luck going his way against United, but his team hit the bar twice as they tried to retrieve a first half deficit. Matheus Cunha's goal just before the break - set up by the always impressive Bruno Fernandes - proved to be enough to secure a league double for the visitors.
Losing Estevao to injury early on was another unwelcome setback for the Blues as they once again drew a blank in attack.
"We want our Chelsea back!" chimed the Matthew Harding faithful. They are simply not used to seeing their team flounder this badly - and they aren't holding back on letting their feelings be known.
