Tuesday night's 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United proved to be the final straw for Thomas Frank, whose eight month reign at Tottenham has been brought to an end.
The writing has been on the wall for a while as the former Bees boss struggled to cope with a glut of injuries and a horrific home record that prompted discontent among Spurs fans.
Despite guiding the club to the Champions League knockout stages, he oversaw only two wins in the past 17 Premier League games and Spurs lie 16th in the Premier League - just five points above the drop zone.
With the north London derby against Arsenal on the horizon, the club's hierarchy felt the time was right to end the Dane's tenure after a run of eight league games without a win - the club's worst run since 2008.
Frank's contract had been until 2028, but in recent weeks, Spurs fans have taunted their boss about the seeming inevitability of his departure.
The 52-year-old said after the defeat to the Magpies that he did not fear the axe and believed he was the right man to take the club forward.
He replaced Europa League winner Ange Postecoglou last summer because Spurs' league form had been dire. It had been hoped he would bring some of the magic he produced at Brentford, but was unable to build the momentum, or style of play needed to get the fans onside.
