Spurs player ratings after 2-1 victory over Norwich City

Tottenham Hotspur edged out bottom of the table Norwich City, but were the players any good? We assess the team.

Hugo Lloris: 6 Fortunately for Tottenham, the keeper was relieved to see a couple of Norwich efforts on the counter attack lack accuracy from good positions. Couldn’t quite keep out Teemu Pukki’s penalty to level the contest.

Serge Aurier: 7 Got forward on several occasions in the first half – and made capital with a superb low cross which facilitated an easy finish by Dele Alli for Spurs’ opening goal in 37 minutes.

Jan Vertonghen: 6 Allowed Canaries’ danger man Pukki to get the better of him in vulnerable areas on occasion. Not one of the stoppers’ more commanding displays – and it was subsequently no surprise to see boss Jose Mourinho replace him in the latter stages.

Toby Alderweireld: 6 The creator of a delightful cross-field pass to give Son a great chance to make it 2-0 early in the second half. Given a tough time by Pukki, especially in the second half with the Canaries spreading their wings.

Ryan Sessegnon: 6 Supplied some good crosses early on from the left, targeting striker Erik Lamela. Caught for pace occasionally and eventually suffered when he clumsily brought down Max Aarons for a Norwich penalty – from which Pukki converted - in 68 minutes.

Harry Winks: 6 A busy presence alongside Giovani Lo Celso, in support of solitary Spur Heung-Min Son up front. Regrettably limped off, however, due to a late challenge by Todd Cantwell as Norwich pressed for an equaliser.

Giovani Lo Celso: 7 Great work rate by the Argentine, regularly hustling the Canaries deep inside their own half. Always prompting moves for the Lilywhites between midfield and attack. Lovely reverse pass to Alli which culminated in the conclusive goal by Son.

Lucas Moura: 5 Seldom got much change from Canaries’ towering Scottish defender Grant Hanley. Never looked remotely likely to add to a mere four goal league tally this term. Disappointing.

Dele Alli: 7 Lacked a little bit of sharpness in the opening spells – but a simple finish inside the six yard area from Aurier’s dangerous cross brought some first half relief for Tottenham after spells of stodgy play. Good assist for Son’s goal which grabbed the points for Spurs.

Erik Lamela: 7 Brought out a smart save from Canaries’ keeper Tim Krul in 9 minutes following a left-footed half volley almost giving Spurs the lead. Fortunate to escape injury after a cynical tackle by Norwich midfielder Cantwell and was subbed thereafter for Christian Eriksen.

Heung-Min Son: 7 When in trouble, you can always count on the South Korea star. Charged with an enforced forward role due to Harry Kane’s recent injury. Lacked accuracy with a 25 yard drive in 23rd minutes, which sailed over the bar amid significant Tottenham pressure. Missed an even better chance six minutes later from close range. A frustrating night – until he headed home the clincher in 79 minutes.

Erik Dier: 5 Came on for injured Winks in the 55th minute to add bite to the Tottenham ranks. Just about did enough to anchor play.

Christian Eriksen: 5 Surprisingly kept on the bench by Mourniho until replacing Lamela in 61 minutes, the Dane – strongly linked with an imminent move to Inter Milan – received a muted reception from the home support. Barely involved in any meaningful sense and devoid of his usual lightness of touch.

Gedson Fernandes: 5 Came on for Vertonghen with 15 minutes left. Not enough time for the loanee from Benfica to stretch Norwich to any real degree.
