Spurs land Benfica's Fernandes

Tottenham confirmed the expected signing of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on Wednesday morning - the midfielder agreeing an 18-month loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent.

The 21-year-old was also wanted by West Ham but the player preferred a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It is thought it will take around £40m to secure a long-term deal.

Fernandes has two caps for Portugal, having played for his country at youth level since 2014.
