Sarri: We have to try and solve the problem of the last 20 metres

Maurizio Sarri isn’t that bothered by the transfer market and frankly has a major job on his hands trying to get his charges to score following a dour 0-0 draw at home to Southampton.

It is two matches in a row at the Bridge that the Blues have failed to score and they behave dropped five points in that time.

The Italian said: “I tried to do my job, I think. I think we played a very good match for 80 metres of the pitch, then we were in trouble in the last 20 metres. We created goal opportunities, not too much, but it's not easy to create a lot of goal opportunities in this type of match, because they were very low. Of course if you're able to score the first goal you're able to create a lot of opportunities, because you can find spaces.

“We have to try to solve the problem of the last 15, 20 metres. In the last matches we were in full control of the match, everywhere against every team. For us it's not easy at this moment to score the first goal. We have to solve this problem.”

Chelsea signed American Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million on Tuesday but Sarri is unconcerned.

“I'm not in charge of the market. I have to think to my responsibility,” he said.

“I have to try to improve my players, my team, my offensive phase, or better my offensive phase in the last 20 metres. The club knows my position, my opinion. It's up to the board.”

Misfiring Alvaro Morata had the ball in the back of the net but was given offside, Sarri said of this: “I don't know (if he was offside). It was too far from my bench to have a clear opinion, clear idea. I have no idea about this goal.”

Willian was forced off with an injury and Sarri is aware he is running out of wide options.

“I think Willian’s injury is not really very serious,” he said.

“The report of the doctor is not serious, also for Pedro. I think Pedro in one week will be able to train with his team-mates.

“Of course, in this match it was really very difficult for me because Pedro, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi was out. After 35 minutes Willian was out.

“On the bench I had only one offensive player, but Loftus-Cheek has back trouble.

“For me it was really very difficult to try to change the match in the last 30 minutes. I put Cesc Fabregas on the pitch, but only because in that moment of the match we moved the ball not like in the first half. I wanted another technical player to improve moving the ball. At the moment we're in trouble with the offensive players.”

Of Olivier Giroud’s injury Sarri said: “I think it's better than what I thought after the Crystal Palace match. The doctor told me that in 10 days he will be able to train. The problem is this moment of course. Today was really important to try to change the match. It was impossible.”

With Arsenal just three points behind and Manchester United six, is Sarri worried about them?

“That Manchester United, at the end of the season will fight for the top four is normal,” he said.

“They had only a bad period. It can happen. They're one of the best teams in England, in Europe. It's normal they'll be fighting for the top four.”
