Chelsea hammer Spurs 5-0 in Conti Cup clash

Beth England scored a brace, her second a screamer, as Chelsea thrashed Spurs 5-0. tonight in the final group match on the Continental Cup at Cheshunt stadium.

Other goals from Deanna Cooper and Ali Riley, both their first for the club, ensured Chelsea finished the group at the top with six wins out of six.

Skipper Karen Carney was the other scorer.

This was a mismatch from the first minute. Chelsea a top professional side, training full-time against part-timers who had to take time off work to play and will be back at work, first thing in the morning.

Emma Hayes gave valuable minutes to Anita Asante, whom has recovered from an ACL injury sustained on England duty.

The first effort in the first minute, fell to the home side with right back Megan Wynette zipping the ball just over Lizzie Durack’s crossbar.

Inevitably, Chelsea took control of the ball, dominating possession.

The Blues took the lead from a Karen Carney corner and Deanna Cooper was on the spot to tuck home from close range past Emma Gibbon.

Ali Riley added number two in classy fashion on 19 minutes.

Following a prolonged period of keep ball, the American found herself on the edge of the Spurs penalty area. She looked up, took one touch and curled the perfect right-footer into the top left-hand corner of Gibbon’s net.

There were no changes from either side at half-time.

But within 30 seconds of the restart Karen Carney slotted home from a Adelina Engman pass to ensure there was no way back for the north Londoners.

Goal number four came from a sweeping move, 0n 60 minutes, involving Anita Asante, Erin Cuthbert and Carney that saw Beth England head home from close range on the second attempt after her first header was parried in to the air by Gibbon.

England was not done yet, as England thrashed home a screamer of a left-footer from 20 yards out. The ball sailed over Gibbon and into the far corner of her net for number five.

The players take a break from football action. Their next match is a WSL 1 home game against Everton, at home, on January 6. They return to training on December 28.
