Spurs’ player ratings in FA Cup semi-final despair - again

April 21, 2018

Spurs crashed out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage for the eighth time, and that despite taking an early lead against Manchester United at Wembley this afternoon.

Dele Alli gave the north Londoners the lead but Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera hauled Jose Mourinho’s back into the tie and ultimately they have a date with destiny against Chelsea or Southampton next month in the final.

Here are the Spurs player rating as compiled by Paul Lagan

Spurs

Michel Vorm 6

Hesitancy early on when he kicked into touch a simple back pass, unsettled his own defence. There was a distinct lack of confidence in the keeper from that point on.  Two Hollywood saves looked great but the ball was going wide each time.

Kieran Trippier 6 Excellent  going forward and a beauty of a long ball to Eriksen that set up Alli’s goal. But suspect in defence.

Jan Vertonghen 6

Failed to track in-running Ander Herrera for United’s second goal. He battled Lukaku for most of the game and was aggressive but fair.

Davinson Sanchez 6

Hardly touched the ball, but marshalled his centre-half position well.

Hung-Min Son 5

A bright start on the left. Excellent when the quick counter-attack was on but when he got to the United penalty area, he ran out of ideas too many times. Subbed with five minutes left

Harry Kane 5

When he doesn’t have a sniff of the ball, he can look like a passenger. He hardly had the ball.

Eric Dier 6

A short pass here, a short pass there - the defensive-midfielder never gave the ball away, but rarely contributed much beyond the centre circle. He was booked as well.

Mousa Dembele 4

Poor performance from one of the players that Spurs needed to be at his best. A lovely piece of tekkers in the early part, was followed by what looked like a slight muscle problem. From that moment on, he was out of sorts and justifiably subbed.

Dele Alli. 6

One late run, unchallenged into the box and pow! - Goal. That is Alli at his best. He threatened more of the same but it never quite happened enough.

Christian Eriksen 6

Always looked as if he was going to produce a sublime piece of play. He did for Alli’s goal, but not enough when he was really needed - to save them

Ben Davies 5

An anonymous performance which resulted in a 68 minute substitution. The left back controlled his area effectively, but failed to be effective.

Subs, Hugo Lloris

Toby Alderweireld

Erik Lamela on for Son 85 minutes

Victor Wanyama

On for Dembele 78 minutes

Mousa Sissoko

Serge Aurier

Luca Moura

On for Ben Davies after 68 minutes
