Thomas Frank is convinced the promotion race will not be won and lost until the final two rounds of fixtures - despite seeing his side surrender two more precious points in the race for the second promotion spot.
On a day when Norwich City clinched their return to the top flight, Brentford missed a great chance to close the Watford gap. As it stands, a disappointing 0-0 draw with Millwall leaves them still six points behind the men from Vicarage Road - albeit with a game in hand and a home fixture against the Hornets still to come.
An unexpected loss for Watford at Luton compounded the sense of what might have been.
Swansea, two points better off than Brentford, having played a game more, are also in the mix.
"On paper it looks more difficult for them," Frank said of the remaining fixtures for both sides.
"I would still say they are huge favourites. It's up to them to lose it. They have done very well.
"But I'm more or less sure that it will go down to the last games. Momentum will shift from now through until the end of the season and we need to stay extremely focused and do everything we can to get a win against Cardiff [on Tuesday] and then see.
"Of course Watford lost so it feels like a missed opportunity but in 24 hours we have to be ready to train well and go again."
Asked if he was angry with his side for allowing another opportunity elude them, the Bees boss said: "If we were not running enough and didn't want to go into the duals, [yes] but every time you see Brentford, or my team, they run, they fight, they do everything they can. Sometimes on the day you can't get that quality out there.
"There's a hurricane inside me. I just try to stay calm and level headed. You try to have a cool head and a warm heart.
"We're not far off it with seven games unbeaten but of course we know that we'd love to have turned at least three of the draws into wins and then it would have been a completely different situation - and we should have. That's the frustrating part.
"It was flat today, definitely. It was not a lack of passion, will, effort, hard work, attitude, not at all.
"There was a lot of running. We were pressing. It's just if you are not 100 per cent on it in a game against Millwall, who we know are really strong defensively, and don't have that quality and one v one action, then it's not enough.
"The final decision, shot, or pass was not sharp enough on the day."
Frank added: "We hoped there was momentum from the win at Preston [last week] that we could build upon and also some confidence, but every game has its own history.
"We need to do better but it's fair to say that in the Championship you don't win every game 5-0. We just struggle a little bit to win the tight games in this moment in time."
